Day 1 – Introduction & First Construction Steps
The retreat begins at 14:00 with a short introduction to the Tsuur flute, Tovshuur lute, and Ikel Khuur. Participants start preparing the wooden parts and soundboxes of the instruments through cutting, shaping, gluing, and binding techniques. After dinner, the evening session focuses on hollowing the Tsuur, preparing the necks of the Tovshuur and Ikel Khuur, and soaking the animal skins that will later be used for the soundboxes.
Day 2 – Shaping & Assembly
After breakfast, the second day continues with assembling and refining the instruments. Participants work on attaching necks and soundboxes, stretching and applying skins, carving tuning pegs, and sanding the instrument bodies. During the evening session, attention shifts toward shaping and polishing the Tsuur flute, preparing the finger holes, and continuing the detailed finishing work on the Tovshuur and Ikel Khuur.
Day 3 – Fine Craftsmanship & Finishing
The third day focuses on detailed craftsmanship and final assembly. Participants install tuning pegs and bridges, assemble the Ikel Khuur structure, and continue sanding and refining the instruments. The Tsuur and Ikel Khuur are painted and polished, while in the evening the Tsuur is tested and prepared for playing, and the Tovshuur receives its strings and bridge.
Day 4 – Final Adjustments & Playing
On the final day, all instruments are completed and adjusted for playing. Participants finish tuning and testing the Tsuur, complete the final setup of the Tovshuur, and string and adjust the Ikel Khuur. In the afternoon, everyone gathers for a shared closing session where the newly crafted instruments are played, tested, and celebrated together.
