Explore the art of throat singing and the power of the female voice

Experience the beauty of Mongolian throat singing in an intimate retreat setting in nature: surrounded by peace, comfort, and warmth. D. Zolzaya is one of Mongolia’s foremost professional female throat singers: an artist and teacher who has redefined what it means to carry this ancient art as a woman. Born in Chandmani (Western Mongolia), known as the birthplace of throat singing (khöömii), she has dedicated her life to preserving and sharing its traditions.

This retreat offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from her in a small, personal setting. Over four days, she will guide participants through the foundations of throat singing and overtone singing, offering insight into breathing, resonance, and the role of women in this tradition. Between workshops, you can fully unwind in the warmth of the farmhouse — enjoy the heated indoor swimming pool, sauna, or whirlpool, or simply relax by the wood-burning stove in the cozy living room. All rooms and bedrooms are comfortably heated, creating a peaceful and nurturing atmosphere throughout your stay. Meals are freshly prepared, vegetarian and mostly vegan, in harmony with the Altai spirit — nourishing, warm, and full of flavor.

A rare chance for women to explore throat singing under the guidance of a professional Mongolian female throat singer — in the comfort of a warm and peaceful winter retreat.

Tip: Here’s our blog post about this very retreat — and why this week is unlike anything else in the world. We share personal insights, stories, and what makes it such a rare opportunity to be part of.

Program – an overview of your musical retreat.

Day-to-Day Program.

  • Day 1 – Arrival & welcome - From the afternoon, you are welcome at the farmhouse in Ter Wupping. After settling in, we share a warm welcome dinner. In the evening, Zolzaya and Rowan introduce the retreat with stories, music, and live demonstrations: a gentle and cozy start to discovering Mongolian throat singing together, with space for sharing and connection by the fire.
  • Day 2 – Breath, voice & resonance - The day begins with body and breath awareness. Under Zolzaya’s guidance, we explore how sound is created from within: connecting breath and voice. Through various exercises, participants begin to find their natural resonance and the first overtones of their voice. Between sessions, enjoy moments of relaxation, or enjoy the warm pool or sauna.
  • Day 3 – The Art of Khöömii & women’s voices - We dive deeper into the techniques of throat singing and the cultural background of women in this tradition. Zolzaya shares her story as a professional female throat singer in Mongolia: offering both technique and insight into what it means to carry this art as a woman. During the day, several group sessions build confidence and connection. In the evening, unwind with gentle yoga or a quiet sauna moment.
  • Day 4 – Integration & closing - Our final day brings everything together: sound, overtones, and connection. Participants integrate what they have learned through a final workshop and a closing circle of music and reflection. We end with a festive farewell dinner in the warmth of the farmhouse before departure.
Throughout the retreat, there will naturally be room for improvisation, spontaneous performances, jam sessions, campfires, and quiet moments whenever needed.
